Solution
With a growing population and increased funding, Ghana’s healthcare sector is gaining better facilities including the Korle-Bu Paediatric Hospital in Accra: set to be the country’s first dedicated children’s hospital. Working alongside NMS Infrastructure and the Ghana Ministry of Health, tp bennett undertook the design for the facility, which includes a new block as well as the refurbishment of existing buildings at the Korle-Bu site.
Links were made with the earlier buildings, joining up emergency and diagnostic services and placing an emphasis on the efficient flow of patients, staff and clinical processes. To ensure that it could function independently, Korle-Bu Children’s Hospital has ensured that it has energy and maintenance back-up.
Cultural factors were also observed. As extended families often travel a long way to see children, guest accommodation has been created, featuring different kinds of guest rooms and external cooking spaces.
