Solution

On a quiet road of warehouses by the Thames in Wandsworth, tp bennett was invited to design a new, 72-apartment residential scheme. Point Pleasant was the result: an innovative development that, although sold to a housing association before completion, has become a pioneer of its kind.

Opting for a white-rendered modern warehouse appearance, the practice deployed a modular planning approach to the design, with accommodation ranging from studios to three-bedroom units.

As this could have produced repetitious elevations, tp bennett decided to give the façade a sense of identity by using a pattern of bay windows and open balconies, with colour elements adding to the sense of articulation and dynamism.

The north-facing bays allowed residents views of the river while reducing solar gain. The development was stepped back at upper floor levels, offering roof terraces and a penthouse level.

Fitting in well with the local Victorian streetscapes, Point Pleasant set the tone for future developments, and is now considered an exemplar of modular residential architecture.
