Lombard Street is one of the most historic streets in the City of London, with its origins in the weaving guilds and the banking industry. Here the practice designed a striking new office building in the midst of a Conservation Area and surrounded by listed buildings – one of the few new-build offices in the area.
Designed sympathetically within the historic streetscape, the contemporary façade uses a traditional palette of stone, bronze and glass within a modern unitised construction. The Lombard Street façade features a unique artwork by artist Kate Maestri, who has created a motif representing individual gold threads: a reference to both the weaving industry and the wealth of the banking sector.
The double-height entrance foyer leads into a long span, open-plan and column-free floorplate, designed to appeal to the modern occupier’s desire for maximum flexibility. The building provides flagship quality accommodation in the heart of London’s financial district. “With such a significant location, this building had to be of the highest quality, respond to the site’s heritage, and yet be contemporary, elegant and refined.” says tp bennett’s David Blair.
