Royal Trinity Hospice

Solution

Founded in 1891, Trinity is the oldest hospice in the country, with 28 beds in a listed Georgian terrace overlooking Clapham Common, augmented by a post-war extension in historic gardens. Although grand, these facilities had become out-dated, making clinical care difficult and isolating patients from activities.

To encourage change and offer greater comfort, tp bennett was tasked with re-designing the hospice to reconfigure its wards and corridors, house contemporary clinical infrastructure and encourage patients and their families to merge in- and out-patient activities including yoga, coffee and games.

A contemporary pavilion was designed, allowing patients access to the gardens, including balconies onto which beds can be taken. Taking account of trends in palliative care, internal spaces were designed to offer more patient autonomy, offering controllable privacy via screens and smart glass panels. With the accent on individual choice, the award-winning design can claim to have pioneered the idea of a hospice as a place for living, not for dying.
