To reflect ANZ’s aspirations of being a leading environmentally sustainable bank, we led the design of its new UK & European headquarters with circular economy principles to create a workspace that is sustainable, functional and energising.

The move to a new 12th floor space in the Cargo building in Canary Wharf also presented the opportunity to mark the bank’s focus on the wellbeing of its people and customers. The design provides a new agile workspace that articulates ANZ’s culture, personality and values and reinforces the bank’s global and regional identity.

A bespoke and robust sustainability strategy tailored to the client, building and project, makes ANZ one of London’s most sustainable fit-outs. This included efficient water management, specifying low embodied carbon materials and finishes, smart waste management and incorporating biophilia. Of the furniture products required, 80% reused existing material. The project is an industry case study in implementing circular principles in the fit-out of offices and is included in a British Council for Offices (BCO) report on Circular Economy in Offices.

Understanding the role of the post-pandemic office, the design is centred around enabling a sense of community and encouraging collaboration. The relaxed, fluid and productive spaces allow for versatility and flexibility. Expressing people at its centre, the floorplate is arranged to create different zones of activity and a sense of journey across the whole office. The open plan environment with a visible leadership team signals an inclusive and approachable organisation.

ANZ’s new UK & European headquarters is a sustainable, healthy and equitable project that reflects the organisation’s identity, values and aspirations.
