Royal Trinity Hospice (Planning)
Royal Trinity Hospice
London Borough of Lambeth
28 bed in-patient wing
The oldest hospice in the country, Royal Trinity Hospice had grown organically since it began in 1891, and had acquired several buildings in a historic setting in Clapham, London.
With tp bennett giving the historic hospice an architectural upgrade consisting of new buildings as well as the refurbishment of historic parts, the planning team led detailed negotiations with the London Borough of Lambeth.
Although the building’s benevolent use was looked upon favourably, it took what tp bennett’s Mike Ibbott calls a “leap of faith” for the authority to approve a modern building in this historic garden setting. As the building has to facilitate visitors to see patients, parking and access needed to be provided as well, involving further negotiation. The new design was approved, enabling the practice to press ahead and deliver the award-winning hospice in 2010.
