In Wembley, north-west London, Grand Felda House is a large residential student scheme housing a mixture of studios and cluster flats. tp bennett was invited by Tide Construction to create a ‘playful’ interior scheme for Grand Felda’s amenity areas, and create an attractive environment that would entice a range of students both national and international.

Despite being near Wembley Stadium, a sporting theme was not chosen. Research showed that the Great British Empire Exhibition of 1924 took place on the site, so the theming was informed by that historic event, featuring colourful images evoking circus fair and a festival atmosphere.

Grand Felda has a range of communal attractions including a screening room, games room, lounges and a gym on the ground floor. To enhance this offering and create a language for the block, playful aspects such as a ‘selfie’ photography booth and a ‘Come Dine With Me’ kitchen were created, complementing statement lighting, colourful decorative patterns and in-house hashtag campaigns. “We wanted to design an environment that was creative, durable and exciting” says tp bennett’s Nicola Matthews.
