The Hanson Eco-House project was a commission from Hanson Building Products to demonstrate the environmental benefits of modern masonry construction. The form of the house takes its inspiration from the kilns traditionally used to manufacture bricks and employs the same basic principles, drawing fresh air in at ground level and exhausting hot air via the heat stack effect, in this instance by means of a zinc-clad roof lantern located at the centre of the square plan.
The house is constructed using innovative, prefabricated brick /block cavity wall panels for external elevations allowing quick construction times to be achieved. A super insulated composite floor system at ground floor level, with pre-stressed Hollowcore concrete units forming the first floor, and heavyweight block internal partitions forms a construction strategy which creates a high level of thermal mass, storing heat and making the house cooler in summer and warmer in winter. The house is naturally ventilated and to maximise the energysaving potential of the system bedrooms (generally kept cooler than living spaces) are located at ground level, with the open plan living areas, including dining room and kitchen, above, where they occupy a lofty and dramatically vaulted space. A small roof terrace is accessible from the living space.
