tp bennett designed the original building for Hanson Building Products in 2010. The design of the original site reflected that of a BREEAM Excellent building; natural ventilation, a ground source heat pump, rain water harvest, thermal mass and permeable paving allowed for an equally sustainable building. The versatility of brick is reflected in its use as a cladding on the office facades, as a load-bearing material in the cores (perforated to provide a striking feature when backlit after dark) and as a structural frame in the form of the tall piers, infilled with glazing, which give the building a strong presence.
tp bennett was then commissioned by the Wooten Academy Trust to convert the space into one of the first science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Colleges in the UK. The existing shell and core provided a space with the flexibility to accommodate this new use.
The internal design includes a combination of open-plan and enclosed teaching spaces and informal study areas; this atypical form of study aims to prepare students for future work in a variety of business environments. Following a complete enrolment programme, Kimberly Stem College will accommodate 700 students.
