NESTA – the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts – has the responsibility for supporting new talent, innovation and creativity in the UK. tp bennett’s task – as designer for the new offices, housing over 150 staff – was not only to provide the practical facilities required by the organisation but also to create interiors that reflected the identity of NESTA and promoted its “brand”. The new offices needed to be inspirational and stimulating, reflecting its key objectives within a considered budget.
tp bennett’s strategy was first to understand the client’s needs and aspirations. There was a clear imperative to achieve a non-corporate look – the offices should be essentially informal, flexible, expressive of creativity, youthful, unintimidating, and even casual in character. Open-plan in layout, they feature durable, high-tech materials such as rubber. Bookcases are used to break down the office floors into working compartments, where individuals or groups can create their own space and with the potential for the entire floor to be easily reconfigured.
