Microsoft occupies five buildings at Thames Valley Business Park, employing around 2000 staff previously scattered across other locations. A masterplan for the company’s campus was developed by tp bennett, which was also responsible for the individual buildings. To date five phases are complete with a sixth building, as yet unrealised.
The brief for Building 5 was for the provision of a reception area, a lively social hub serving buildings 4,5 and 6, with restaurant, cafe and exhibition space, at ground level, plus three floors of office space accommodating 500-600 workstations. Parking for cars and bicycles, plus a gymnasium, are provided at basement level. A ground floor link bridge provides a connection to Building 4. The atrium, with its striking “hanging box” of meeting rooms, is not only a place for social interaction: it is also a calm and relaxed place where many staff work, a reflection of Microsoft’s emphasis on innovation in the workplace.
