Doug Smith

Having studied at Leicester School of Architecture from the mid 1970’s, Doug joined tp bennett as an architect in 1984.  In 1985 he became an Associate and a Partner two years later in 1987.

Doug moved the practice from Holborn to their present offices in One America Street on the Southbank in 1998.  He was Managing Partner for 10 years between 1999 and 2009 and led the practices’ conversion to a Limited Liability Partnership in 2005.  With Richard Beastall, Doug co-founded and established the practices’ interiors division in 1997.

Doug and his highly talented team have extensive experience of the commercial, residential and hospitality sectors in the UK and internationally, both new build and refurbishment.  He also has considerable experience of masterplanning, urban regeneration projects and corporate fit out work.

Doug led tp bennett’s push into international work beginning in the early 1990’s working on projects in Portugal followed by South East Asia and then in the early 2000’s in Russia and subsequently the UAE respectively.  He continues to actively support the identification and pursuit of international opportunities and help build on tp bennett’s established international design alliance network.

Doug sought out and led the merger of the renowned health and education design practice, Stillman Eastwick Field, in 2004 bringing Jonathan Darke and his award winning team into the practice.

Doug is committed to contemporary architectural design and has a keen interest in practical, pragmatic  and cost effective sustainable design having founded tp bennett’s sustainability unit in the late 1990’s.
